Professional Experience
Dec 2005 - present
Freelance Web Designer and Developer
I am working on small and medium-sized websites taking a creative brief from clients, producing the graphic design for the website and other branding materials (e.g. business cards and letterhead). I frequently see the website through to completion, producing the HTML/CSS, developing customised modules using PHP that allow interactivity and integrate with behind-the-scenes systems, and also provide a full content managements system (CMS) based on the WordPress CMS.
I frequently work as a PHP and client-side HTML/CSS/Javascript developer with designers and other teams and individuals on other projects.
I also provide IT consultancy services
Examples below were completed by me alone from conception through to installation except where otherwise stated.
-
Equanalta
A website to promote the work of life-coach Jackie Hawken. This website was designed and built using WordPress.

Andrew Kinsman
A website to showcase the work of artist and portrait painter Andy Kinsman. This website was designed and constructed in little more than a day and was built using WordPress. I also designed promotional postcards to accompany the site.

The Blessing
With a record deal, an album to launch and a first UK tour to promote the album, I had my work cut out. I designed and produced the artwork for the CD packaging, for the sleeve and label for our forthcoming 7 inch vinyl single, for tour posters, promotional postcards, T-shirts and, of course, a revamped website.

Adventureyogi Holidays
A new business start-up, the branding, logo, promotional postcards website and newsletter were designed from (literally) the most minimal of briefs. The site is fully content managed using a custom built theme and plugins for WordPress.

Beyond Current Horizons
A new education research project being coordinated by Bristol-based Futurelab, Beyond Current Horizons involved working with information architects and designers at Brighton-based Clearleft and producing a dynamic site that was easy for Futurelab staff to maintain and update. Built using WordPress, the site was built within time and budget constraints.

Aviation Environment Federation
A complete revamp of their existing website. We went back to basics with the structure of the site's content, who needs it and how they will access it. The look and feel was completely overhauled using only their logo as a starting point. The site is fully content managed using a custom built theme and plugins for WordPress.

Campaign Against Urban Sprawl
A new campaign aiming to make sure that local people understand how much countryside around Bath might be lost to new housing developments, what impact the loss of this countryside will have and to explain what actions you can take to influence the decision making process. This website was produced within approximately 3 working days from receiving the go-ahead to going live.

CPRE Avonside
This charity wanted a design that looks fresh and attracts new members, demonstrating a local presence while maintaining consistency with the CPRE national website. This was the first website for this organisation and it was important to produce a balance between providing up to date content and the time constraints that mean busy members don't have time to update the site regularly.

Lloyds Bank Intranet Solutions
I have completed 2 projects with Lloyds Bank Intranet Solutions. The first was as a usability consultant, producing best-practice guidelines and a recommended approach for the navigation of a complex and inter-related group of mini-sites being redeveloped on the Lloyds bank Intranet.
The second project was working as a software tester, producing and executing test plans for an internal development project.
-
La Cour Holiday Home
Produced design and concept from scratch. Site uses WordPress to manage content, AJAX to manage the smooth transition between pages (integrating with WordPress) and Flash to produce and stream the slideshow and music.

Gensurgeon
Working for a graphic designer, I produced a heavily customised implementation of WordPress allowing multiple links between pages and a redesigned admin area. Security was a key concern so this site includes a facility whereby GPs can securely login to make a referral, and send an encrypted email.

Sustainable Redland
A group of residents from the Redland area of Bristol commissioned me to produce a website to encourage local people to help in the fight against climate change. The brief was to create a site which had a calm, relaxed feel but which communicated the group's message clearly. It also had to be simple for non-technical members of the group to keep the site updated.

Interests
Music continues to be a pervasive and motivating force in my life. I still play, write and record in a professional context regularly.
I am very interested in food, both by helping to run my family's allotment and in cooking the produce.
Environmental concerns have caused me to review and revise many aspects of my life. I am an active member of Bristol's Friends of the Earth group and have helped them with campaigning and in particular with establishing and utilising a strong web presence for their campaigns.
Above all my spare time is kept occupied by a young family. Inevitably I am involved with my daughter's school's PTA but my main objective is to be more interesting than CBBC to my two young children aged 4 and 5.
